Saving Sloths Together with The Sloth Institute

For the Love of Sloths

Toucan Rescue Ranch (TRR) and The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica (TSI) came together to form Saving Sloths Together, a nationwide project seeking to provide greater opportunity for orphaned, rescued and rehabilitated sloths in Costa Rica. Their purpose: to facilitate the medical care, enrichment, and nurturing of skills sloths need to ensure a successful release back into wild.

In June 2016 TSI announced its collaboration with TRR to enhance its Sloth Release and Education Program at TRR. TRR’s release site is located in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica, which is one-hour from TRR headquarters. The release site has 40-acres of land where roughly 50 sloths since 2007 have already been released by TRR. TSI has furthered this release program by establishing a program for the release of hand-raised sloths. The collaboration, in alignment with TSI’s mission of the conservation and well-being of sloths, focuses on a 3-part release plan of hand-raised orphaned sloths back into the rainforest.

A large component of this collaboration is the ability to share sloth expertise from all aspects of a sloth’s rescue, rehabilitation, and eventual release. As a part of this, TRR focuses on the medical care and rehabilitation of the sloth, while, TSI ensures the proper tracking and release of sloths in the program.

Both organizations are so excited to announce this BIG NEWS with you. We will be doing joint campaigns to help raise funds for this important project, as well as, offering shared internship opportunities.
