To celebrate Mother’s Day in Costa Rica, let’s honor the story of Viola and Cello

In celebration of mothers in their month of recognition in Costa Rica, we want to share the inspiring story of Viola, a two-toed sloth who arrived at Toucan Rescue Ranch in July, along with her baby, Cello.

This sloth mom and her baby remind us that perseverance and mutual care are powerful forces that allow us to face and overcome life´s challenges.

Viola was found in Siquirres after being seen moving among the trees with her little baby. During their journey, a branch unexpectedly broke and they both fell from up high. In the fall, a branch embedded itself in Viola´s hind leg, causing a deep wound that left her immobilized. Despite intense pain, Viola never let go of Cello, who clung to her at all times.

Although Viola´s injury was severe, this brave mother did not give up. Despite the accident, her maternal instinct was stronger than any pain as she kept Cello by her side until rescue came.

Mother and son were brought to our sanctuary in Heredia where our veterinary team assessed the situation. Various treatment methods were attempted to save Viola’s leg but eventually after thorough analysis; the difficult decision was made to amputate it for long-term well-being. Meanwhile, Cello has been carefully fed and cared for while gradually recovering from his injuries.

Viola’s rehabilitation process has been long and challenging but her determination has not wavered. Each day this courageous mother works tirelessly on improving mobility while keeping watch over the growing cello as he explores the world around him.

The story of Viola and Cello is more than just a tale of survival; it is a testament to the immense strength of a mother. Despite sustaining an injury that would change its life forever, Viola’s priority remained ensuring welfare for its offspring . This protective instinct compelled Viola´s fight even when its body near collapse serves as moving reminder that every mother regardless species is willing take on most adverse situations overcome unimaginable obstacles make immense sacrifices for those they love.

Today, Viola and Cello have become part of our Saving Sloths Together (SST) program.
