On November 29th, the world comes together to celebrate International Jaguar Day. It’s a day dedicated to one of the most iconic and enigmatic big cats, the jaguar, and its vital role in our ecosystem. At Toucan Rescue Ranch, we join in this celebration because jaguars are awe-inspiring creatures and because we understand the importance of other wildcat species in Costa Rica, such as the oncilla, the ocelot, and the jaguarundi. As apex predators, Jaguars serve as indicators of a healthy, balanced environment. However, these majestic animals and smaller wildcats like the oncilla and ocelot face numerous threats, including habitat loss and poaching. International Jaguar Day serves as a reminder of the urgency to protect all these incredible felines and their habitats.
