The Toucan Rescue Ranch rescues dozens of parrots every year. Nearly all of them are confiscated from people’s homes as illegal pets. In Costa Rica, it is illegal to own any native wildlife as a pet. Traditionally, Costa Rican families have kept these animals in their homes which has caused a huge unreleasable permanent resident population for rescue centers like Toucan Rescue Ranch.

MEET MICHIGAN J FROG: Michigan loves to ‘hop’ around the enclosure, entertaining his housemates with his excessive charm, vaudeville-style dancing, and singing classic songs of the 1890s.

  • Known for: Being the Release Site’s own private dancer
  • Michigan J. Frog is 15 years old!

Interesting Red-lored Parrot Facts (Included in the Symbolic Adoption Package):

  • Red-lored parrots have a bright green parrot of humid tropical lowlands.
  • Red-lored parrots are relatively large in size, with a large head, short necks, and tails, native from eastern Mexico to northwestern South America.
  • Red-lored parrots are distinguished by their red forehead and lores.
  • Red-lored parrots can live up to 50 years or more!

In Costa Rica, it is illegal to sell or own any native fauna. As a licensed rescue center, it is our duty to uphold the law and what it stands for. As well as being illegal in the country of Costa Rica, it is a core part of TRR’s mission to protect wildlife from the illegal pet trade – as this is something we combat every day.
